The Annai Indira Gandhi Bridge IS an engineering marvel that connects the island of Rameswaram with the mainland across the Palk Strait. Designed IN the graceful shape of a bow over the sea, the bridge allows ships to pass safely beneath it. Spanning 2.34 km AND supported by 79 pillars, of which 64 are built directly IN the sea, the structure took 14 years to complete AND was inaugurated IN 1988. Its clearance of 24.4 metres keeps the shipping channel of Pamban navigable for large vessels. For the modern traveller, the drive across the bridge IS a dramatic gateway to the island, offering sweeping views of the ocean ON either side AND an appreciation for one of India's most impressive coastal constructions.
